For most brides ordering a new gown, we recommend starting the shopping process 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. Here's how that timeline typically breaks down:

1–2 months: Shopping appointments, trying on gowns, and making your final decision
4–6 months: Gown production and delivery (most bridal gowns are made to order)
2–3 months: Alterations (typically 2–3 fittings)
2–4 weeks: Buffer before the wedding for final steaming, pickup, and peace of mind

Add it up, and you're looking at 9–12 months minimum for a stress-free experience.

What If I Have Less Time?

Life doesn't always follow the ideal timeline, and that's okay. Here are your options if your wedding is sooner:

6–8 months out: Still very manageable. Many of our gowns can be ordered and delivered in this window with standard production times. Start shopping immediately.
3–6 months out: Rush orders are possible, though they may come with additional fees. Some designers offer expedited production. Alternatively, our Sample Sale has gowns available to take home the same day.
Under 3 months: Your best bet is a gown you can purchase off-the-rack. Our Sample Sale and select Best Sellers may be available in stock for immediate purchase. Basic alterations can often be completed in 4–6 weeks.

Why Do Bridal Gowns Take So Long?

Unlike a dress you'd order online and receive in a few days, most bridal gowns are made to order. When you place an order at a bridal boutique, the designer begins producing your specific gown — in your selected size, fabric, and color — from scratch. This craftsmanship takes time, and it's worth it.

Once your gown arrives, alterations are almost always necessary. Even a gown ordered in your exact measurements will need to be tailored to your unique body. Plan for at least 2–3 alteration appointments spaced a few weeks apart.
